The Artist Paints Katherine Gorge

size 960mm x 700mm

Price

Giclee on Canvas $450

Giclee on Paper $250

“The Artist Paints Katherine Gorge”. This resulted from an art tour with Margaret Cowling Arts, of the Northern Territory. For me, Katherine Gorge was the high point of the tour. We were taken twice to the same location to allow us better to understand the site. This was done at the end of the first gorge. My room-mate, painting from another position, provided the human presence to show the scale of the gorge. The colours deepen to mid morning, then, by midday, the colours are leached out by the full sun.

Welcome To My World

size 760mm x 1000mm

Price

Giclee on Canvas $450

Giclee on Paper $250

“Welcome to My World” presents the view from the top of Mt. Major, reached by one of the Misty Mountain walking tracks which cover the wilderness area around Ravenshoe. Today most of the forests are part of the World Heritage Rainforest area and old timber tracks have been converted to walking tracks. In the distance is the wind farm on Windy hill with Ravenshoe out of sight to the left. In September, rock orchids grow on the rocky ledges and the Resurrection plants turn crimson and cerise.

Rivershine

size 610mm x 920mm

Price

Giclee on Canvas $410

Giclee on Paper $200

This was the major painting for my exhibition, “The Blencoe Falls Experience”. In April and early May, 2009, my friend Mick Reed and I made two trips to the Blencoe Falls National Park. We were blessed to have clear days each time, between periods of rain. The country was lush and green and the river at the Cashmere crossing just low enough to cross.
We parked at the look out so I could be up before sunrise to catch the changing light on the falls. I took many multiple photos of the gorge and from these chose the moment after sunrise for my major painting; the sun was just touching the ranges but the shine on the river had not yet faded.
Altogether I completed fifteen paintings of this area; nine were sold at the opening. We have prints available of even the small ones and the whole collection is available in the small book, “The Blencoe Falls Experience”.

The Old Order Changeth

size 620mm x 900mm

Price

Giclee on Canvas $410

Giclee on Paper $200

I first experienced Cobbold Creek twelve years ago. We camped and took the boat through the narrow gorge. Emerging from the constraint of the shadowed gorge, we saw ahead country suddenly open to bright sunlight, where the shimmering stream flowed quietly between huge paperbarks. I sketched this scene but the foreground tree dwarfed the stream and the painting did not eventuate. Ten years later, when we revisited the spot, I was surprised to see my old tree had fallen. The composition was now complete. As I worked on this painting, I was constantly aware of the beginning of a line from a poem, “The old order changeth....” Eventually I remembered the source. It is King Arthur’s last speech to Sir Bedivere, in Tennyson’s “Death of Arthur”; “The old order changeth, yielding place to new, And God fulfils himself in many ways, Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.” Several people have felt this painting depicts time flowing; make of it what you will.

The Home of the Peregrine Falcon

size 895mm x 595mm

Price

Giclee on Canvas $410

Giclee on Paper $200

Bullaringa was once a cattle station, now a National Park, north-west of Mt. Surprise. The Red River flows under sandstone cliffs and there is an amazing variety of wildflowers and bird life in the surrounding forests. We swam in this pool in the late afternoon and were constantly under the watchful eye of a peregrine falcon. Even the rocks seemed to be filled with presences. Nature and the past were very much alive here.

Spirit of Lawn Hill

size 490mm x 415mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $150

My Lawn Hill paintings resulted from a trip with my friend Mick Reed in 1993.On our first day there I made a sketch of the creek with the sandstone cliffs of the gorge behind. Mick waited patiently for me to finish it. This has always been my favourite; it has the colours of the rocks and water and the peaceful spirit of the place which I will always remember.

Easter, 1982

size 370mm x 494mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $140

This was painted in 1982, at the time of the Faulklands War. For weeks I was bothered by an image in the back of my mind which I could not quite see. I attempted a number of drawings of waves, none quite right, Then, piece by piece, the image came, only complete with the red roof on the “toy house”. One visitor remarked I had painted his dream. I gave each of my children their choice of an original. This was my son Rik’s choice.

Rocks and River Gum

size 420mm x 370mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $130

I first discovered the Dalrymple walking track on an outing with the Ingham branch of the Wildlife Preservation Society. On one creek crossing I was stunned by the clarity of the reflections but had no opportunity to record the scene. Much later I persuaded a friend to come back with me to find this painting but the sky clouded over with a thin mist and the reflections vanished. However, on another section of the creek was an eerie pink glow; against this the satiny trunk of a river gum contrasted with the grainy pink granite. I sketched this and when I returned home the painting came easily. This was my daughter’s favourite.

The Golden Years

size 610mm x 245mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $130

On our return from Porcupine Gorge in 2011 we had just crossed Bundock Creek in the late afternoon when I caught sight of a patch of golden light up to our right. I asked to stop, jumped out with camera and scrambled up the bank and through a barbed wire fence. Only then did I see before me this old tree silhouetted against the golden light. There was just time for three quick photos before the light faded. How fortunate to have been given this gift for my golden years.

Canoeing, Katherine Gorge

size 295mm x 520mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $130

“Canoeing, Katherine Gorge” was painted from plein air sketches and photos taken on my trip to the Northern Territory with a Margaret Cowling art tour. This is early morning, when the first intrepid tourists are paddling up the Katherine Gorge. The changing light brings out different colours in the rocks and water and gives many opportunities for paintings.

Storm Over Kaban

size 260mm x 520mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $130

Kaban is a farming area just north of Ravenshoe, with rich red volcanic soil. There is an alternative gravel road to Herberton from Ravenshoe, and one afternoon, as I came home by this route I was struck by the light before the storm. There was time only for a few photos which I joined together and then made my sketch. I prefer to make a sketch on site but sometimes this is not possible. Local viewers like to be able to identify their farm, so I am careful to show buildings accurately. I believe the crop is peanuts, but it could be potatoes as this is what is grown there now.

First Pick, Chillagoe Country

size 250mm x 540mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $130

On my second visit to Chillagoe the summer storms had just arrived to break the drought, and the recently burnt country was springing back to life. The joy in the air was infectious. This is a most simple view of regenerating bush country but it always brings me joy just to remember it.

Peaceful Afternoon, Windy Hill

size 500mm x 690mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $210

Windy Hill, an old shield volcano a few kilometres from Ravenshoe, is today the site of a large wind farm. Before the construction of the turbines, I loved to drive up to Windy hill to enjoy the view to the ranges and across to Ravenshoe. This painting was done then.
Many people feel wind farms are a blight on the landscape, but we rather like our turbines. However the memory of the natural landscape is preserved in this painting.

Rose Gums, Ravenshoe

size 600mm x 500mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $210

I had been wanting to paint rose gums for several years but had never found a stand which really spoke to me. Then, one bright morning, I took a new road to Atherton. On a secondary road I suddenly saw my rose gum stand. Fortunately I had the camera and took a number of photos which I later pieced together to give me an extensive view. This allowed me to produce the sketch for the pastel. Both these trees were felled by cyclone Larry so it is fortunate that I saw them when I did.

Bush Secrets

size 617mm x 470mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $210

On my second trip to Chillagoe the summer storms had just arrived and all the country was refreshed and springing into life. The tree trunks were washed clean of dust and the little creek was already running clean. I had already checked out the swimming pool on Chillagoe Creek but this old paperbark was further along the creek. Its gnarls and hollows invite a reflective viewer to see images of small bush animals within it, hence the name.

Entwined, Wild River

size 490mm x 360mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $190

People often ask how long it takes to do a painting. It is not the painting time but the finding time which often takes longest. I made three trips to this section of the Wild River and knew there were paintings there but somehow I could not see them. Then on the afternoon of the third trip two suddenly were there for me. While preparing the pencil sketch for “Entwined” I was constantly aware of Rodin’s sculpture of the praying hands so somehow that ,too, crept into this painting of a peaceful afternoon by the river.

Hillside, Herberton

size 600mm x 370mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $160

Tim Daniels has a business called Wilderness Expeditions which is a delightful way of bush walking using pack donkeys to carry the gear. I did a short walk from Kalanga near Herberton to Evelyn near Ravenshoe, with one overnight camp. Some of his trips are much longer, of several days, with great camp food and a simple camp bed all carried by the donkeys.
This painting, of a hillside near Herberton, was one of several places which held my attention on this trip. Perhaps it has been a dingo’s lair. The hollow provides a little micro climate for the ferns.

John's Dahlias

size 510mm x 505mm

Price

Giclee on Paper $160

The dahlias came from my neighbour John’s garden, exactly one year after he died. He had always been generous with his gift of flowers. The pot was given to me by a friend who had previously owned my house; the table was my mother’s gift, and the background was my kitchen. All my flower paintings have special associations for me. Several local identities bought prints of this painting in memory of John and the new owner understands its associations too.

Swimmers Edith Falls NT

size 445mm x 200mm

Giclee on Paper

Price $110

I encountered this magic spot near Katherine on our art tour. There is a huge plunge pool beneath a waterfall. The crocodiles are the freshwater type, relatively harmless to swimmers. In the late afternoon, the reflections from surrounding cliffs transform the water to gold and sapphire ripples. Some travellers recently told me that the flood rains washed away a section of the cliffs so this scene will not ever be seen again.
I did two paintings as the sun declined, changing the colours; this one and a little later, “Last light, Edith Falls”. Both are available as prints.”Swimmers” was a finalist in a competition in “International Artist”, in the Rivers Lakes and Oceans section.

The Patient Fisherman

size 390mm x 307mm

Giclee on Paper

Price $90

This painting is of Chillagoe Creek, just above the town weir. It looked like a good fishing spot so I added the kingfisher.

Torimba Street Garden

size 360mm x 460mm

Giclee on Paper

Price $120

This is the garden in the main street of Ravenshoe on a peaceful October morning . It is Torimba Festival time but no crowds as yet. The main street gardens are maintained by the garden club, all volunteers. This painting is a tribute to their efforts and to the pioneer women who planted the jacarandas.

Serenity Wild River

size 300mm x 420mm

Giclee on Paper

Price $90

The Wild River has just emerged from the gorge into this long deep reach of the river. It was a favourite place of the tin miners when they needed some rest and recreation. Black bream were easy to catch and it was a pleasant place to camp. I had visited this spot three times before I found this subject.

Rainbow Millstream

size 240mm x 290mm

Lithographic Print on Paper

Price $20

This is a view of the Millstream Falls not available to visitors today as the track to the bottom of the falls has become too dangerous. I have done eight pastels of these falls, at different times of day and at different seasons. Two are available as prints.
