![]() Ravenshoe is a small town on the Atherton Tablelands, south west of Cairns, North Queensland, Australia. RAVENSHOE VISITORS CENTRE, a wonderful rainforest interpretive centre with an adjoining display of local Aboriginal culture, can provide information on the local and surrounding attractions. Ravenshoe is the highest town in Queensland, (about 900m or 3000 feet). It has a pleasantly cool climate all year and in summer provides a welcome retreat from the coastal heat. Once Ravenshoe was a thriving timber town but since 1987, when most of the forests were classified as World Heritage Rainforest, this industry has almost disappeared. Today it boasts a wind farm with wind turbines powering the Tablelands and is the service centre for the Tully Falls hydro scheme. Ravenshoe is a friendly, supportive community where visitors are warmly welcomed. It is still small enough for people to know one another but large enough to have all essential services including public internet access. In October (for 2 weeks, beginning on the first Saturday) there is the annual Torimba Festival which includes a great display of timber craft at the local Festival Hall, across from Win's Gallery. There are several beautiful waterfalls- on the Millstream in the wet season
the falls are the widest in Australia, while in winter the falls are a
white lace curtain over black volcanic rock
As well as Win's Gallery there is "The Old Ambulance Art and Craft" with folk art, character dolls and feminine designer dresses. Our local steam train, Capella is the pride of our local volunteer railway enthusiasts. On Sundays at 1pm Capella runs to Tumoulin and back. Groups can make bookings for special runs. Please check with the Ravenshoe Visitors Centre. Ravenshoe is the gateway to the Western Savannah: Blencoe Falls on the
Herbert River where an episode of Survivor was filmed in October, and the
world famous Lava Tubes of
Undara.
There is a bus service to Ravenshoe from Cairns (White Car Coaches P.O. Box 140 Atherton Ph 07 40911 855) or you could hire a car and explore the Tablelands as a whole. Accommodation includes an old fashioned pub, modern motels and
caravan parks in town and in the surrounding countryside unique farmstays
and homestays with bed and breakfast. .Most have individual cottages. You
